Evita Tezeno | Portraits in Collage

I hold close the memories of days gone by.

I relish the time before there was Wi-Fi, cell phones and so many other technological visual distractions. Longing for the simple things of yesterday, I hear the silent echoes that  dance in my visual consciousness.  Those images are the embodiment of my art practice; a visual narrative, a rearview mirror perspective of my life experiences.

My work is mainly in collage. The use of vibrant colors, layered surfaces and lush textures are combined to create my intriguing and inviting portraits.  The process is a journey and the end point is always well planned.

It usually begins with painting paper, using watercolor, acrylic, crayon and various other mediums and techniques. Starting with a preplanned sketch I use semitransparent paper to trace shapes and then cut out the patterns from my painted papers then arrange them like a puzzle to form the facial structure, clothing and various parts of the figure.

Sentimental memories take me back to a time in my collective memories before electronic devices, when children played outside and when adults dressed for success. I create a carefree everyday life devoid of tension that presents us collaged portraits that are idealistic, serene and most importantly, hopeful.
