Jessica Bellamy | Forage

Jessica Bellamy’s work is informed by themes of science, nature, time, and place.  More specifically, how cultural and historical interpretations of these ideas influence our sense of identity and purpose.  Through the exploration of various media, her creative process involves the burying, manipulation, layering and excavation of natural elements and imagery.

The paintings in Forage are inspired by the craft and artforms of her multiracial heritage, which is American Indian, European, and Tejano.  Each composition begins with the foraging of found objects; a practice associated with Hunter-Gatherer societies. Elements such as seeds and flower petals are buried in encaustic medium and arranged into intricate patterns.  Feathers are crafted to become talismans that are then juxtaposed with lace and floral motifs and textured surfaces.  As she works on her paintings—from act of foraging natural objects to the resolution of a piece—she feels honor and a tangible connection to the cultures of her fore-bearers.
